The Italian Healthcare System under the lens

OASI is the Observatory on Healthcare Organizations and Policies in Italy of CERGAS-SDA Bocconi. It was established in 1998.

Since 2000, OASI researchers have been publishing an Annual Report. Here you find some highlights from the 2020 edition.

    In 2018 life expectancy in Italy was 83.4 years (+3.5 years with respect to 2010). Other countries: Japan (84.2), Spain (83.5), France (82.8), Sweden (82.6), Canada (82), UK (81.3), Germany (81), USA (78.7).

    Life expectancy at 65, no functional limitations

    In 2018, on average in Italy it was 9.9 years. However, there is a gap between the North and the South. The maximum value is registered in the Autonomous Province of Trento (+11.3), while the minimum is in Calabria (7.9), Basilicata (7.9) and Campania (8.1).

    In the worst affected regions, the allocation of services was radically transformed within few weeks: 42% of beds for acute Covid-19 patients in Lombardy and almost 20% nationally. 

    Teams became much more interdisciplinary.

    The NHS has significantly increased its current spending: +5 billion estimated for 2020 or 4.7% of total expenditure.

    The digitalisation of the NHS intensified and spread in many relevant areas, such as:  remote medicine and remote surveillance; digital access to medical records; teleworking.
